A Frugal Shopper’s Guide to Walmart: What to Buy, Not Just What to Avoid

Your Action Plan for Smarter Walmart Shopping

We’ve covered a lot of ground, from simple math to store psychology. But knowledge is only powerful when you put it into action. You don’t have to change all your shopping habits overnight. The best way to make lasting change is to start small.

Here is your action plan for your very next trip to Walmart. Pick just one or two of these to try.

1. Make a List, Check the Ad. Before you leave the house, make a physical list of what you need. Then, take five minutes to look up the weekly ad for your store on the Walmart website. See if anything on your list is on a Rollback and add it to your plan.

2. Walk the Clearance Aisle First. When you get to the store, make your first stop the clearance section. You might find something on your list—or a great substitute—for a deep discount right away. This can save you from paying full price for it later in your trip.

3. Choose One Store-Brand Experiment. Pick just one item you buy regularly, like coffee, peanut butter, or bathroom cleaner. Buy the Great Value or Equate version instead of your usual name brand. Think of it as a small, low-risk experiment in saving money.

4. Focus on Unit Price for One Category. You don’t have to calculate every price in the store. For your next trip, just focus on one aisle. If you’re buying canned soup, for instance, take a moment to compare the unit prices of all the different brands and sizes. This small exercise will build a powerful, lifelong habit.

By taking these small, deliberate steps, you will transform yourself from a casual customer into a confident, frugal shopper. You will know you’re getting the best possible value for your hard-earned money, and that is a truly satisfying feeling.
