Do you know where to find the cheapest gas in the US? These are the states that have the lowest gas taxes!

If you are a fan of road trips or you just travel a lot, getting gas in these states might save you a fortune. The price you pay at the pump is not just the price of the gasoline itself. The gas taxes that differ from state to state may add up a significant amount to the final price, and knowing more about this can save you some money on road trips and everyday commutes.

It can sound surprising, but there are some states where it can add up to 50 cents or even more per gallon, and over time, this will simply drain your wallet.

This is why we think it is important to know about the states that have the lowest gas taxes, so you can try to save more money for other activities. Let’s say you are on a road trip. Wouldn’t you like to have more money for souvenirs? We would love that, and we are about to present you with the places where you can find the cheapest gas in the US!

1. Texas

Let’s start with the Lone Star State. If you are living in Texas or it just happens to drive by, you are in luck when it comes to gas prices! Here you can find some of the cheapest gas available in this state, and this is because it has one of the lowest gas taxes in the whole US.

The tax is 20 cents per gallon, and this equals significant savings for anyone who manages to fill their tank while in the territory of Texas. But there is a catch! This tax is one of the most stable gas taxes in the entire country because it hasn’t been changed since 1991.

This is the exact reason there are some rumors about how this low tax will not be able to keep up with rising inflation and also with the need for money for the rehabilitation of Texas’s road system. They will need funds for this, and it can lead to a bigger tax.

But since this is one of the places where you can find the cheapest gas in the US, if you’re nearby, don’t hesitate and break at the pump.

2. Alaska

We are going to the opposite side of the country, Alaska. This state takes the crown, because here is the place that sells the cheapest gas in the entire nation. Only $0.895 per gallon! This is a surprising price, and thinking that you can drive such a long way with just $20 can make your day better. And considering that the Last Frontier is the biggest state in the US, this low tax is such a blessing.

The only problem is that not many people who are not Alaska natives get to drive in Alaska. This state is not bordering any other US state, and for a lot of folks, driving there is out of the question. This is not a traditional road trip location, but if you are living there, it is nice to know and take advantage of the cheapest gas available in the whole country.

Bonus: Alaska is also the only state that has no state sales tax!

3. Mississippi

This is a great place for budget-conscious drivers because it has some of the cheapest gas available in the country. Boasting a gas tax of only 18 cents per gallon, this is an amazing place for those who want to fill up their tank.

If you are passing through Mississippi, a break at the gas station is more than welcome, considering that the neighboring states of Tennessee and Alabama have higher gas taxes.

But one thing you should be aware of is the overall tax structure of Mississippi. Indeed, it is one of the best states if you are looking for the cheapest gas, but if you want to stop and buy some groceries, the state sales tax sits at 7%, which, if you ask us, is quite a lot.

4. Colorado

This majestic state, located in the Rocky Mountains, has more to offer than beautiful landscapes. One of the cheapest gas taxes can be found here, and it is only $0.22 per gallon!

But there is a thing you should keep in mind: even if the gas state tax is 22 cents, there are regional variations. Different localities can add their own sales tax on top of that, so the gas price might change depending on where you are in the state. Don’t be surprised if, in some towns and cities in Colorado, the combined tax will exceed 10%.

This state is still a good one regarding gas prices, but you need to know and be cautious about these variations. Knowing these things can help you be prepared for anything.

5. Oklahoma

Are you planning on visiting the legendary Route 66? If yes, you need to know that Oklahoma has one of the cheapest gas taxes, at just 19 cents per gallon. Compared to the neighboring state of Kansas, which has a gas tax of 24 cents, Oklahoma has an amazing price to offer.

But in the same fashion as Texas, this state relies on the gas tax to fund transportation infrastructure projects. Since the tax hasn’t been changed for years and prices are rising, as is inflation, there are concerns that the gas tax might become more expensive.

6. Hawaii

Volcanic landscapes, incredible beaches, and one of the cheapest gas states in the US. These are a few things that describe Hawaii, and because of this, we believe it is one of the best travel destinations for those who are budget-oriented.

Just 16 cents per gallon! This is the gas tax in Aloha State, and this allows you to explore its complete beauty. We know that you can’t use a car to reach Hawaii, but once you are on the island, it is a good idea to rent a car and start traveling around.

But there is something that you need to consider. Counties can add their local taxes, and this might lead to a slightly higher price per gallon. Hopefully, you can still save money because this state has one of the lowest sales taxes in the entire country.

These are the states where you can find the cheapest gas in the entire US! Next time you travel or go on a road trip, you can choose to go to one of these states or just pass through them and fill up your gas tank for an amazing price. Even if you have a strict itinerary, sometimes straying off the route just a little bit in order to find cheap gas might be a good idea.

Also, less money for gas means more money for your adventure!
