Bogus Refund and Withholding Scams

Some scammers promise unusually large tax refunds or suggest altering withholding to maximize returns. These fraudulent claims may be made through email, social platforms, or even online ads that mimic official tax services.

They create urgency or pressure to act quickly and may direct taxpayers to unauthorized websites.

Legitimate refund amounts are calculated strictly based on earnings, documented deductions, credits, and actual withholding data. If someone promises an inflated refund or urges you to submit personal information to increase withholding refunds, it’s best to consult a trusted tax advisor or check your data directly through official IRS channels.
