California

Who’s Eligible: California stimulus checks (formally known as “Middle Class Tax Refunds”) are available if:

  • You were a California resident for at least six months in 2020;
  • You filed a 2020 tax return by October 15, 2021;
  • Your income didn’t exceed certain thresholds in 2020 (California adjusted gross income of over $250,000 for those filing as single and married filing separately, or over $500,000 for anyone less); and
  • Weren’t claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return in 2020.

Amount: Between $200 and $1,050, but it depends on your filing status, income, and whether you have dependents. Here’s the official tool that can help you estimate your stimulus check payment.

When Sent: If you previously received a Golden State Stimulus (GSS) direct deposit payment in 2020 or 2021, you should have received your stimulus check from October 7 to October 25, 2022 (again, by direct deposit).

If you received a GSS payment via debit card e.g., California didn’t have your bank account details), the state sent stimulus check debit cards from October 24 to December 10, 2022.

If you didn’t previously get a Middle Class Tax Refund debit card but were expected to receive a debit card for your California stimulus check, your payment was issued from December 5 to December 31, 2022.

People slated to receive a debit card for their stimulus checks but who changed their bank account or their bank since filing a 2020 California tax return will be sent a debit card between December 17, 2022, and January 14, 2023.
