6. Amtrak Senior Discount

Retirement is the ideal time to see the country by train. Now, while traveling by train may be convenient, comfortable, and romantic, it can often be pricey. Well, not if you’re 65 or older.

Amtrak travelers aged 65 or over are eligible to get a 10% discount on most rail fares on most company trains. You can also receive a 10% senior discount on any cross-border train trip operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada (the minimum age requirement for this one is 60 years old).

Combine your senior discount with Amtrak’s ongoing sale for early birds, and you’ve got yourself an affordable train fare. Just make sure you book your trip 7–21 days in advance.
