Budgeting on a Fixed Income: A Month-by-Month Survival Guide

Month 3: Taming the Grocery Giant

For most people on a fixed income, the grocery bill is the largest and most flexible expense. This is where you have the most power to make a real impact on your monthly budget. This month, we focus on smart strategies for saving money on groceries without sacrificing quality.

Your first mission is to become an expert on unit pricing. Look at the shelf tag, not just the big orange price. The unit price tells you the cost per ounce, per pound, or per 100 sheets. A larger box of cereal might seem more expensive, but its price per ounce could be much lower than the smaller, on-sale box. This little number is your secret weapon against marketing tricks.

Next, it’s time to fully embrace generic brands and store brands. Many people worry that the quality is lower, but for most staple items, this is simply not true. Stores like Walmart have invested heavily in their own lines, and many of the best Walmart Great Value products are indistinguishable from their name-brand counterparts. Think about items like flour, sugar, salt, canned vegetables, pasta, cleaning supplies, and paper towels. The savings on these items alone can free up $30, $50, or even more in your monthly budget. Try swapping just a few items this month to see for yourself.

Also, be aware of “shrinkflation,” where manufacturers keep the price the same but reduce the amount of product in the package. A coffee can might look the same, but it may contain 10 ounces instead of the 12 it used to. Unit pricing helps you spot this, too. Planning your meals around the weekly sales flyer is a classic strategy, but be careful not to buy items you won’t actually use just because they are on sale. Food waste is budget waste.
