Costco vs. Sam’s Club: Which Warehouse Club Saves You More Money?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Warehouse Clubs

Can I shop at Costco or Sam’s Club without a membership?

Generally, you need a membership to purchase items. However, there are a few exceptions. At both clubs, federal law allows anyone, member or not, to use the pharmacy to buy prescription drugs. Some states also have laws that allow non-members to purchase alcohol. You can also often get into the food court without a card, and anyone can shop on the club’s website (though non-members may face a surcharge). The best way to shop without a membership is to be given a Costco Shop Card or a Sam’s Club gift card by a member; these cards will grant you entry to the store.

Which club has better deals on gas?

This is a very common question, and the answer is: it depends on your specific location and the day. Both Costco and Sam’s Club are almost always significantly cheaper for gasoline than nearby traditional gas stations. The savings can be anywhere from 5 to 25 cents per gallon. For many members, the money saved on gas alone is enough to pay for their entire annual membership fee. The best approach is to check the gas prices at the clubs near you to see which one is consistently lower in your area.

Are the return policies really that good?

Yes, they are famously generous. Both clubs have a “100% satisfaction guarantee” on both the membership and the merchandise. If you buy a product and are unhappy with it for almost any reason, you can bring it back for a full refund. This policy is a cornerstone of their customer service and builds incredible loyalty. As mentioned earlier, electronics usually have a more limited 90-day return window, but for most other items, the policy is incredibly flexible.

Is buying in bulk always cheaper?

No, and this is a critical point for all smart shoppers. While the unit price at a warehouse club is usually lower, it’s not a guarantee. A deep sale or a “buy one, get one free” promotion at your local supermarket can sometimes result in a lower unit price on certain items. The only way to know for sure is to be a vigilant price-checker. Keep a small notebook or use an app on your phone to track the unit prices of your most frequently purchased items at all the stores you shop at. This will empower you to know a true deal when you see one, no matter where you are.
