Medical Debt Relief: States That Act vs. States That Don’t

Examples seniors may find most hopeful

New Jersey and Connecticut have run large forgiveness rounds that removed tens or hundreds of millions in medical debt for residents, often using ARPA funds and nonprofit partners. Those programs prioritized lower-income households and people with deeply burdensome medical bills.

Michigan announced a substantial forgiveness round covering over $144 million for hundreds of thousands of residents, showing that even traditionally red-leaning states can pursue relief when political will exists.

These initiatives show local policymakers can move fast when they prioritize residents’ financial health.

Final thoughts

Medical debt is painful, but recent efforts at the state and local level have shown that real relief is possible. Whether you live in a state that has embraced forgiveness or in one where bills are still being fought over, there are practical, no-cost steps seniors can take right now to protect their finances and seek help.

Start with your hospital, your local government pages, and a call to 211—you might find help is closer than you think.
