A Frugal Shopper’s Guide to Walmart: What to Buy, Not Just What to Avoid

Decoding Walmart’s House Brands: Great Value and Equate

One of the most direct paths to significant Walmart savings is by embracing their store brands, primarily Great Value for groceries and household goods, and Equate for health and beauty products. Many shoppers are hesitant to switch from the name brands they’ve trusted for years, but understanding how these products are made can ease those concerns.

In many cases, store-brand products are manufactured in the same facilities as their famous-brand counterparts. The core ingredients are often identical. The primary difference is the cost of marketing. Name brands spend millions on advertising, celebrity endorsements, and fancy packaging. Store brands skip all that, and the savings are passed directly to you. Think of it this way: you’re paying for the product, not the commercial.

So, where should a frugal shopper start? There are several categories where the best generic products from Walmart offer incredible value with virtually no drop in quality.

What to Buy: Great Value Staples

For your pantry, Great Value is a champion. Basic ingredients, what economists call commodities, are the perfect place to switch. Think about items like all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, baking soda, and common spices like black pepper or cinnamon. The chemical compound for salt is the same no matter what box it comes in. The same goes for basic canned goods like beans, corn, and tomatoes. Pasta and rice are other excellent candidates where you are unlikely to notice any difference except for the lower price on your receipt.

In the dairy and frozen sections, Great Value also shines. Milk, butter, sour cream, and block cheeses are typically high-quality and much cheaper than national brands. The same is true for frozen vegetables and fruits. A bag of Great Value frozen peas is just as nutritious and tasty as the one from the brand with the famous green giant on the package.

What to Buy: Equate Health and Personal Care

The Equate brand can save you a fortune in the pharmacy aisles. The key here is to look at the active ingredients listed on the back of the package. By law, the Food and Drug Administration requires generic over-the-counter drugs to have the same active ingredients, strength, and dosage form as the name-brand version. This means the Equate-brand pain reliever with 200mg of Ibuprofen is medically identical to Advil with 200mg of Ibuprofen.

This principle applies to allergy medications, cold and flu remedies, antacids, and first-aid supplies. Why pay double for a fancy box when the medicine inside does the exact same thing? Beyond medicine, Equate offers great value on items like cotton swabs, bandages, rubbing alcohol, and basic skin lotions. While some complex skincare formulas might have unique patented ingredients, for everyday moisturizers and cleansers, Equate is an excellent choice.

When to Be Cautious (and How to Experiment)

Of course, not every store-brand item will be a perfect substitute for everyone. Taste is subjective. You might find that you prefer the specific flavor of Heinz ketchup or Hellmann’s mayonnaise. Some people find that name-brand paper towels are more absorbent or that a particular brand of dish soap cuts grease better. That’s perfectly fine!

The smart approach is to experiment. On your next trip, pick one or two items you buy regularly and try the Great Value or Equate version. If you buy a $3 jar of Great Value spaghetti sauce instead of a $5 name-brand one, you’ve risked very little. If you love it, you’ve just unlocked years of future savings. If you don’t, you can go back to your old favorite next time, knowing you made an informed choice. This low-risk experimentation is a core tenet of frugal shopping.
