How Much You Can Expect to Receive

The amount each person receives in Social Security benefits can vary significantly. Several factors influence the size of a monthly payment, including lifetime earnings, the number of years worked, and the age at which benefits are claimed.

To qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, individuals generally need to earn at least 40 credits. Workers can earn up to four credits per year, meaning most people become eligible after about 10 years of employment.

However, eligibility is just the starting point. The actual benefit amount is calculated based on a person’s highest-earning years and when they choose to begin receiving payments.

For example, someone who consistently earned at or near the maximum taxable income level and begins collecting benefits in 2026 could receive approximately $4,152 per month if they claim at full retirement age.

Choosing to claim earlier, at age 62, would reduce that amount to around $2,969 per month. On the other hand, delaying benefits until age 70 could increase monthly payments to as much as $5,181.

While these figures represent the upper end of the spectrum, most retirees receive less. As of late 2025, the average monthly benefit for a retired worker was approximately $2,071.30.

This average highlights the importance of careful financial planning, as Social Security often needs to be supplemented with savings, pensions, or other sources of income.

I only received $1313.00 a month. For SSDI. That’s all. I am not able to get my needs meet. Buy the food I need, get the supplements I need for the health of my body. Or even keep up with the cost of inflation. When the cost of living comes in I am told I get too much income. Then any help I receive gets cut again. Who am I to survive. Becoming disabled was not something I did to me. I just got Multiple Sclerosis. If there is anything I or anything Out there to help me live a better life than one filled with constant worry. I would appreciate the information. Thank you. P Morris

I wish I Was lucky enough to get social security disability income, I should have been getting it since 2016, but I lost my herring and the judge denied me because of my age, and I was tired from my disability attorneys not doing their job, so I didn’t appeal and I should have, I’ve been out of work since 2011, and I can’t receive it because of the rule of you had to have worked within the past 5 yrs and I can’t get SSI either because ‘supposedly’ my husband makes too much ‘money’ which is b.s.!! Consider yourself Lucky That You Can Receive 4,000 or 5,000 a month,I wish I could get that, we Have 2 boys 2 support, I want another baby but I’m afraid we couldn’t do it without another income, But It Is Greatly Needed for us to Survive, to pay bills, rent, food, personal care etc. just a decent life, tired of renting would love a house but that’s never going to happen not when a house is half a million to 800,000 UHG The Disability Laws are F*CKED up! I didn’t go back to work because I was disabled, and I can’t, and I have 0 experience for online, and that kills too, Too much Damned pain, I can’t hardly even do any housework, but then, u got people with no limbs winning gold medals and doing incredible things and then the government says ya, no, if they can do that Then your not really disabled, so no we’re not going to approve you, go to hell, So if You’re getting that amount every month congrats!! By The Time I’m 71 I’m Only Going to get Like $720 bucks a month and I worked a ton of Job’s from 1993 to 2011, Such a joke, I Won’t even be able to pay rent, If I Receive my *regular* social security at 64 it’s only going to be about $500 or 600 a month such b.s. cuz I paid way more into it than that!! And the government makes enough money They can afford to give Me a couple 1,000 a month. But Anyhow Consider yourself Lucky,Ugh $5,000 Extra a month, must be nice!
