Relish your retirement years with savings! Many businesses give exclusive deals to customers over a specific age. In fact, you may be surprised to know that you can actually get some senior discounts even if you haven’t turned 65 yet. That’s because not all retailers classify senior citizens in the same way.
Now, New York has a bad rep for being a pretty expensive state. However, living in the Empire State doesn’t have to be so expensive if you’re a senior citizen. Many shops, restaurants, and other businesses provide senior discounts, and they are waiting for you to save money while making purchases.
This being said, are you ready to start saving on your favorite grocery stores, restaurants, leisure activities, and more? We’ve rounded up 10 senior discounts to cash in on.
Let’s get started!

1. The New York State Golden Park Program
If you’re a New York State resident and you’re 62 or older, you can get free vehicle access to boat launch sites, state parks, and arboretums, as well as a discount on state-operated golf courses and state historic sites. It’s important to note that these deals are only available on certain weekdays (except holidays).
You just have to present your currently valid New York State Non-Driver Identification Card or New York State Driver License at the park entrance. There’s no need for you to make any application beforehand, as your NY State Non-Driver ID Card or Driver’s License serves as your pass. For additional information, check out the New York State Parks website.

2. Gristedes Supermarket
Gristedes Supermarket opened its first store in New York State more than 100 years ago. Since then, the chain has continued to expand and has added pharmacies and cafes to its stores. Currently, they have stores in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Westchester, and Roosevelt Island.
One great way the chain serves the community is by providing discounts for senior citizens. Gristedes Supermarket offers a generous 10% discount to anyone 65 or older. However, you can only take advantage of the discount on Tuesdays. The only thing you have to do is bring a valid ID when you go grocery shopping.
So, if you’re not in a hurry to buy your groceries but can wait until Tuesday, we would really encourage you to go grocery shopping then. A 10% discount can end up being a big chunk of savings, and a 10% savings over time can quickly add up to hundreds of dollars, if not more.

3. America the Beautiful Senior Pass
The National Park Service (NPS) has created several passes to encourage Americans to explore the beautiful places this country offers.
If you’re a US citizen or permanent resident and are at least 62 years old, you can buy a lifetime pass to federal recreational lands, national parks, national historic sites, recreation areas, national wildlife refuges, and national monuments for $80. You can also choose the annual pass, which will cost you $20.
Both lifetime and annual Senior Passes can be purchased directly through the US Geological Survey (USGS) website. There you’ll find the documentation you need to apply as well as more information about the program.

4. Showcase Cinemas
Looking for a way to watch the latest blockbuster movie without spending too much money?
Every Wednesday, Showcase Cinemas offers discounted admission prices to senior citizens age 60 or older. For only $7.75, you can watch any movie you want, and you can also enjoy a special senior-priced combo of a fountain drink and popcorn for only $5.50. With this senior discount, you’ll pay about 50% less than the regular price of admission.
The discounted tickets apply to all movies, including IMAX, MX4D, XPlus, and RealID 3D. The reduced price is available at all Showcase Cinemas locations, minus Showcase SuperLux.

5. Honest Weight Food Co-Op
Honest Weight Food Co-op is a grocery store based in Albany, NY, and it’s known for providing the community with high-quality natural foods. Its mission is to promote more participatory, equitable, and ecologically sustainable ways of living.
Besides its affordable prices, the small retail company serves its community by offering seniors discounted prices. If you’re a senior citizen and are at least 65 years old, you’re entitled to an 8% discount every Wednesday. On all other days, you receive a 2% discount on your grocery shopping.
All you have to do is show up at their service desk and ask for a senior card. Make sure you bring it with you every time you do grocery shopping at Honest Weight Food Co-op.

6. Amtrak Senior Discount
Retirement is the ideal time to see the country by train. Now, while traveling by train may be convenient, comfortable, and romantic, it can often be pricey. Well, not if you’re 65 or older.
Amtrak travelers aged 65 or over are eligible to get a 10% discount on most rail fares on most company trains. You can also receive a 10% senior discount on any cross-border train trip operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada (the minimum age requirement for this one is 60 years old).
Combine your senior discount with Amtrak’s ongoing sale for early birds, and you’ve got yourself an affordable train fare. Just make sure you book your trip 7–21 days in advance.

7. Burger King
Have a hankering for a burger? You may as well get it from the king. Unfortunately, Burger King doesn’t offer discounts for senior citizens on a national scale. However, there are multiple locations in New York State where you can actually benefit from special offers.
If you’re 60 or older, you can get 10% off, with additional discounts on coffee and soft drinks. So, next time you feel like eating a burger, head to your nearest Burger King and ask them if the senior discount is available. Keep in mind that not every location has this offer, so it’s better to ask before ordering.

8. New York State Hunting & Fishing Licenses
Hunting and fishing are two of the most common activities people pick up in their golden years. If you recently decided to turn one of these two into a hobby, you probably know that you need a license to practice it.
If you’re a NY senior citizen of at least 70 years, you can get a discounted price of $5 for fishing, hunting, and trapping licenses. Also, a lifetime freshwater fishing license or a lifetime sporting license is $65. Muzzle-loading and bow-hunting licenses are free.
For more information, check out the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation website.

9. Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace
Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace is the ideal place to grab some staples or pick up everything you need to cook for a house party. For over 20 years, the chain has been a favorite among grocery stores for Long Island residents looking for high-quality American and Italian foods.
If you’re 65 or older, you can save money while doing grocery shopping with Uncle Giuseppe’s senior discount. Every Wednesday, you can get a 5% discount on your purchases at multiple locations, and while this may not seem like much, it can help you save a lot of money over time.
In order to get the discount, you need to visit your store’s customer service desk and show identification. This will automatically add you to their senior discount day every Wednesday.

10. Hoffend’s Discount Liquor and Wine
Whatever your favorite wine may be, you’ll most likely find it at Hoffend’s Discount Liquor and Wine. Located in Rochester, NY, and opened in 1959, this shop has a wide wine selection, including a large variety of NY State wines.
Whatever the occasion, they have all the liquor and wine supplies you need. Moreover, on Wednesdays, seniors receive a 10% discount, so next time you have guests over for dinner, pay them a visit. You won’t be sorry! Oh, and the store holds wine tastings on most weekends!
