The Basic Medical Requirement (Applies to Both Programs)
No matter which program you apply for, you must meet the SSA’s strict definition of disability.
To qualify, your condition must:
- Prevent you from performing substantial work
- Be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
This means short-term or partial disabilities do not qualify. The SSA only provides benefits for total and long-term disabilities.
The agency also evaluates your ability to perform not just your previous job, but any type of work you could reasonably adjust to.
