Appointments: What’s Changed in 2026

In recent years, the SSA has shifted toward more structured service delivery. Starting in 2025 and continuing into 2026, local Social Security offices have increasingly emphasized appointment-based services.

Most in-office transactions, including applying for Social Security cards or discussing benefits, now require appointments scheduled ahead of time to streamline operations and reduce wait times.

While not all walk-ins are prohibited, many services previously offered on a walk-in basis (especially simple benefit questions or appointments traditionally made in person) are now best handled by:

  • Scheduling ahead by calling the SSA toll-free number (1-800-772-1213)
  • Using online tools and the official Office Locator to confirm hours or required documents

This change seeks to improve efficiency and reduce long wait times reported by many beneficiaries. In practice, making an appointment significantly improves your chances of receiving timely in-person assistance and helps ensure staff are ready with whatever documentation or support you need on the day you visit.
