SSI Eligibility: Income and Asset Limits

If you don’t have enough work history to qualify for disability benefits through traditional means, you may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). However, this program is designed for individuals with very limited financial resources, so strict income and asset limits apply.

As of 2026, the maximum allowable resources are $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. These resources include assets such as cash, money held in bank accounts, and investments. That said, not everything you own counts against you. Certain essential assets are excluded from these limits, including your primary residence, one vehicle used for transportation, and basic household items.

In addition to assets, SSI also takes your income into account. This includes wages, pensions, and other benefits you may receive. The more income you have, the lower your monthly SSI payment will be. In some cases, having too much income can disqualify you entirely from receiving benefits.
