Federal Holidays — Offices Closed in 2026

Local Social Security offices follow the federal government’s holiday schedule, meaning they are closed on major U.S. holidays observed by federal employees. For 2026, the known closures include:

  • New Year’s Day — Thursday, January 1
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day — Monday, January 19
  • Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day) — Monday, February 16
  • Memorial Day — Monday, May 25
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day — Friday, June 19
  • Independence Day (observed) — Friday, July 3
  • Labor Day — Monday, September 7
  • Columbus Day — Monday, October 12
  • Veterans Day — Wednesday, November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day — Thursday, November 26
  • Christmas Day — Friday, December 25

On these days, local offices do not offer in-person services, and live phone support may be suspended as well. Some automated phone services remain active, but for anything requiring human assistance, you’ll need to schedule your visit on a regular business day before or after the holiday.

For example, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19) is a full federal holiday in 2026, meaning all 1,400 local SSA offices will be closed and in-person services halted for the day. Similarly, other federal holidays will prompt closures, so planning ahead is crucial.
