Month 9: Exploring Benefits and Local Support

You are not alone in this. There are numerous federal, state, and local programs designed to help seniors and those on a fixed income. This month, your task is to spend a little time exploring what might be available to you. Many people don’t apply for benefits because they assume they won’t qualify, but the eligibility requirements are broader than you might think.

A fantastic starting point is Benefits.gov, which has a confidential questionnaire to help you find programs you may be eligible for. You can also get personalized help by dialing 2-1-1 on your phone or visiting 211.org to connect with local community services.

Look into specific programs that can help with major expenses. For food assistance, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can make a huge difference in your grocery budget. You can learn more from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. For help with heating and cooling costs, look into the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which you can find information about from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Even a small benefit can free up a significant amount of money in your budget for other needs.
