Bigger Refunds Ahead? What the New SALT Cap Means

Additional Factors to Consider

  • Homeownership matters: Property taxes are a major part of SALT deductions, so homeowners are more likely to benefit than renters.
  • Other deductions still count: Mortgage interest and charitable contributions can further increase your itemized total.
  • Standard deduction still wins for many: If you don’t have high property taxes or significant deductions, the standard deduction may remain the better option—even with the higher SALT cap.
  • State differences are key: The biggest winners tend to be taxpayers in high-tax states, while those in lower-tax regions may see little to no change.
