Ghost Tax Preparers

Ghost tax preparers are fraudulent or unqualified individuals who prepare tax returns for clients but refuse to sign them or provide a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).

These preparers often promote aggressive deductions or false claims in exchange for a fee, especially refunds. Because the taxpayer is ultimately responsible for the return’s accuracy, using ghost tax preparers can lead to IRS audits, fines, and even legal trouble.

Taxpayers should always verify the credentials of anyone preparing their returns. Reputable preparers will have a PTIN and clearly explain calculations, deductions, and filing methods. Using directories for licensed tax professionals and well‑known tax preparation services can reduce the risk of fraud.
