How Much Can You Receive in 2026?

The amount you can receive in disability benefits depends on the specific program and your personal financial situation. Payments vary widely, particularly between SSDI and SSI.

For SSDI in 2026, the average monthly benefit is around $1,630, although some individuals may receive as much as $4,152 per month. The exact amount is calculated based on your lifetime earnings and how much you have contributed to the system through payroll taxes.

SSI payments, on the other hand, are more standardized but generally lower. In 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $994 per month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple. However, most recipients receive less than the maximum because their payment is reduced based on any additional income they have.

Can You Qualify for Both SSDI and SSI?

In some situations, individuals may qualify for both SSDI and SSI benefits at the same time. This is known as receiving concurrent benefits. It typically occurs when a person’s SSDI payment is relatively low and they also meet the strict income and asset limits required for SSI.

When this happens, SSI can act as a supplement, increasing the total monthly income to a minimum level set by federal guidelines. This combined support can be especially important for individuals who have limited work history or low lifetime earnings.
