A Frugal Shopper’s Guide to Walmart: What to Buy, Not Just What to Avoid

Leveraging Technology (Gently): The Walmart App and Website

While not everyone is comfortable with smartphones and apps, using Walmart’s digital tools can unlock another layer of savings and convenience. You don’t need to be a tech expert to benefit. Learning just one or two simple features can make a big difference in your shopping experience and your budget.

The free Walmart app has a few features that are especially helpful for the frugal shopper. The most useful tool right inside the store is the barcode scanner. If you see an item on a shelf and the price isn’t marked, or if you suspect it might be on clearance but lacks a yellow tag, you can use the app to scan the barcode. It will immediately show you the correct price for that specific store. This can also help you catch pricing errors at the register.

Another great feature is the ability to create a digital shopping list. Before you go to the store, you can add all the items you need to your list in the app. This does two wonderful things: it helps you stay organized and, more importantly, it helps you stick to your plan and avoid costly impulse buys. When you’re focused on checking items off your list, you’re less likely to be tempted by that display of cookies or the latest gadget near the checkout.

Walmart+ vs. Warehouse Clubs: A Quick Comparison

You may have heard advertisements for Walmart+, a paid membership program. It offers benefits like free delivery from your store, free shipping with no order minimum from their website, and fuel discounts. This service is primarily about convenience. If getting to the store is difficult or you prefer having groceries delivered, it might be worth the cost.

It’s useful to compare this to traditional warehouse clubs like Costco or Sam’s Club (which is owned by Walmart). These clubs focus on selling items in bulk at low prices. The core question for any membership is its return on investment, or ROI. You need to save more than the membership fee for it to be worthwhile.

Let’s do a quick payback example. A basic Sam’s Club membership costs around $50 per year. To make it pay for itself, you need to save at least $50 over the course of the year. If you shop there once a month (12 times a year), you only need to save a little over $4 per trip to break even. For a family buying in bulk, this is easily achievable. For a single person who might not be able to use bulk quantities before they expire, it might not be the best value. Before signing up for any membership, estimate your annual spending and be realistic about whether the savings will outweigh the fee. You can explore options on the Costco website or the Sam’s Club website.
