Frequently Asked Questions About Fixed-Income Budgeting

What if my income isn’t enough to cover my essential bills?

This is a very difficult and serious situation. If your income doesn’t cover your core needs like housing, utilities, and food, your first step should be to explore the support programs mentioned in Month 9. Immediately visit Benefits.gov or call 2-1-1. Local charities, food banks, and utility assistance programs exist specifically for this reason. It is not a personal failure; it is a time to seek the community and government support available to you.

Is it better to use cash or a debit card?

This is a personal preference. Many people find the “cash envelope” system very effective for variable spending categories like groceries. When the cash in the envelope is gone, you stop spending. It makes your budget very tangible. However, if you are not comfortable carrying cash, a debit card works perfectly well as long as you diligently track your spending in your notebook or a simple app to ensure you don’t overspend your budgeted amount.

How can I budget if I’m not comfortable with technology?

You do not need any technology to manage a successful budget. A simple notebook, a pen, a calculator, and a wall calendar are all you need. The principles of tracking your money, creating a plan, and setting aside savings in physical envelopes have been used for generations and are just as effective today as any fancy software. The best system is the one you will actually use consistently.
