The 10 Grocery Items with the Highest Markups at Your Local Supermarket

6. Coffee Pods (K-Cups)

Single-serve coffee pod machines are incredibly popular for their speed and simplicity. However, that convenience masks an enormous cost. When you buy coffee in pre-packaged pods, you are paying for the plastic cup, the foil lid, and the patented technology—not just the coffee. On a per-pound basis, coffee from pods can cost four to five times more than buying a bag of quality ground coffee.

Let’s look at an example. A box of 12 coffee pods might cost $9.00, which works out to 75 cents per cup. A 12-ounce bag of good-quality ground coffee might cost the same $9.00. That bag can brew approximately 30-40 cups of coffee, depending on your preferred strength. This makes the cost per cup around 22 to 30 cents. Over a year, a daily coffee drinker could save over $150 just by switching from pods to brewed coffee.

The Money-Saving Move: Use a Reusable Pod or Brew a Pot

If you love your single-serve machine, you do not have to give it up. The best solution is to purchase a reusable coffee pod filter. This is a small mesh basket shaped like a pod that you can fill with your own ground coffee. They are inexpensive, easy to find online or in stores, and compatible with most popular machines. You get the same one-cup convenience while paying the much lower price of ground coffee. Plus, you reduce your plastic waste.

Alternatively, consider returning to a classic drip coffee maker. You can brew a full or half pot in the morning and keep it warm in a thermal carafe to enjoy throughout the day. The cost savings are significant, and many coffee lovers argue that the taste is far superior to coffee from a plastic pod.
