Walmart’s Generic Brands: 8 Products That Are Better Than the Name Brand

5. Dairy and Cheese (Great Value)

The dairy aisle is a weekly stop for most of us, and the costs can add up fast. From a gallon of milk to a block of cheese or a tub of butter, these are refrigerator essentials. The good news is that this is another category where switching to the Great Value brand is a no-brainer for your budget.

Milk, in particular, is a highly regulated product. The milk you buy under the Great Value label comes from the same or similar regional dairy farms that supply the name brands. It meets the same strict standards for safety and quality. There is no difference in nutrition or taste. The only difference is the carton and the price tag.

When it comes to cheese, the key is to read the label. For basic cheeses like a block of sharp cheddar, mild provolone, or mozzarella, the Great Value version is an excellent choice. Look at the ingredients list. It should be simple: milk, salt, cheese cultures, and enzymes. Avoid products labeled “pasteurized process cheese product” or “cheese food,” as these contain extra ingredients like oils and fillers and are not real cheese. But when comparing real block cheese to real block cheese, the Great Value option offers fantastic savings.

Your Money-Saving Move: Buy your cheese in block form instead of pre-shredded. A block of Great Value cheddar is significantly cheaper per ounce than a bag of the pre-shredded version. While the shredded kind is convenient, it also contains anti-caking additives like cellulose (wood pulp) and costs more for the convenience. Taking two minutes to shred your own cheese at home saves you money and gives you a fresher, better-melting product for your recipes.
