Walmart’s Generic Brands: 8 Products That Are Better Than the Name Brand

Frequently Asked Questions About Walmart Brands

It’s natural to have questions when you’re thinking about changing your lifelong shopping habits. Here are answers to a few common questions that might be on your mind.

Are Great Value products made in the same factories as name brands?

Sometimes, yes. Many store-brand products are made by the same large manufacturers that produce the name-brand goods. This practice is called co-packing or private labeling. The manufacturer might use a slightly different recipe or packaging for the store brand, but the quality and safety standards are often identical. In other cases, Walmart contracts with dedicated manufacturers that specialize in producing high-quality store-brand items.

How can I be sure of the quality of Equate medications?

As mentioned earlier, all generic over-the-counter drugs must be approved by the FDA. They are required to have the same active ingredients, work the same way in the body, and have the same risks and benefits as their name-brand counterparts. The FDA’s standards are very strict. You can trust that Equate products are safe and effective when used as directed. It’s a requirement enforced by federal law, and you can learn more about consumer protection from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

What if I try a Great Value product and I don’t like it?

This is where Walmart’s satisfaction guarantee comes in. Walmart stands behind its private brands. If you purchase a Great Value or Equate product and are not satisfied for any reason, you can typically bring it back with your receipt for a full refund or exchange. This policy removes the risk of trying something new. You have nothing to lose and potentially a lot of money to save.
