Understanding the Two Main Disability Programs
The SSA operates two primary disability programs:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
While both programs require you to meet the same definition of disability, they differ significantly in how eligibility is determined.
SSDI is based on your work history and the Social Security taxes you’ve paid over time. SSI, on the other hand, is a needs-based program designed for people with limited income and resources, regardless of work history.
Understanding which program applies to your situation is the first step in determining your eligibility.
