Top 8 most affordable grocery stores in the US

Do you know which grocery stores are the most affordable ones?

I have always been a frugal shopper who loves shopping for the best discounts. And because lately, it seems like everything costs even more money than the last time I went shopping, this sent me on a search to discover the most affordable grocery store in my neighborhood. Anyway, shopping requires a lot of planning, especially if you want to stay on a budget but still want to have a full fridge. Depending on which side of the country you live on, some of these names might sound familiar, while others may not. Save some money and make a habit out of doing your grocery shopping in those places.

1. Aldi

There is no doubt that Aldi is at the top of everyone’s lists when it comes to grocery stores. This German retailer makes affordable private-label products that attract a lot of customers. Many low-cost items, such as Haas avocados, are available in their stores, and they cost less than $1 each. If you’re trying to switch up your diet and making a habit out of eating healthier in Aldi stores, you will find vegetables, fruits, and other products that can cost a fortune somewhere else (especially if they are fresh).

Furthermore, if you’re allergic to some specific items, Aldi offers dairy-free, gluten-free, and vegan products at very affordable prices. With this inflation, all we want is to save as much as possible, and when a supermarket offers a ton of options the way Aldi does, you know you will be a happy customer.

Some people say that a lot of neighboring stores had to lower their prices to keep up with the competition because it seemed like Aldi was “stealing” their buyers.

2. Costco

Costco! America’s favorite place for shopping. Alongside Aldi, Walmart and Trader Joe’s, Costco is one of the biggest supply chains founded almost 38 years ago. Wow! Time flies indeed but somehow, I feel like the first time I walked through its doors was just yesterday!

Why are their products so affordable? Because you can buy in bulk! And bulk-buying is a very good option, especially for people with big families. What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you say Costco? In my case, it’s that amazingly delicious rotisserie chicken that costs less than $10. Yummy… I got pretty hungry now by just thinking about it! Another amazing perk that makes Costco such a nice and affordable place to shop is their annual membership, which costs about $60 per year. and it’s a great deal!

Even if you need this card to shop in their stores, which a lot of people find an inconvenience, a lot of us are loyal to Costco’s brand. What do you think about this chain of retail stores? How often do you do your shopping at Costco?

3. Fareway

If you’re living in one of these locations: Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, or Illinois, then you’re probably doing your grocery shopping at Fareway. The farm-fresh produce is always the first stop, mostly because the quality and the selection are always top-notch! If you are looking for a place that, even if it’s small, has a plethora of options to choose from, Fareway should be your favorite stop. Because I value supermarkets where the employees are treated well and appreciated for all their efforts, I also try to buy my stuff from stores like these.

And Fareway is by far the best example I can give you. Ever since the first store opened in 1938, Fareway decided to keep its doors closed on Sunday because everybody deserves a day at home with their loved ones. They are so focused on building and maintaining a good relationship with their customers, and if you’ve been there at least once, you would probably understand what I mean.

Fareway is a classic grocery store in which you will be amazed by their affordability. Furthermore, you may want to recommend it to other people as well!

4. Save-A-Lot

Even the name sounds catchy: Save-A-Lot! I honestly don’t know who doesn’t love this awesome and affordable supermarket. They manage to keep their lower prices by only selling their own brands, and that makes all the difference. With “Get more and spend less” as one of their main catchphrases, it is basically more than just good advertising.

They say that if you know how to sell your products, you will have a lot of customers. And it’s true! Save-A-Lot prioritizes its own brands over national ones, and their secret is that they sell one size and one variety of each item. If you are looking for a neighborhood grocery store that doesn’t require a ten-minute drive, Save-A-Lot might become your go-to place.

5. Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s managed to stay on top as America’s favorite grocery store for almost two years in a row. Wow! I can’t say I am surprised because, with so many affordable products and tons of sales discounts, you will definitely love these stores. If you are in search of some healthy grocery options to help you cook light at Trader Joe’s, you will find a lot of stuff to choose from for less than $5. And this sounds like a blessing for a bargain shopper.

They want to offer more than just a trip to the grocery store; they want to give you an amazing experience so you can return here next time as well. Their employees are so nice and always ready to help whenever you ask them. And I think that’s a big plus for a supermarket.

Because they invest a lot in making you comfortable while shopping. So what’s not to like about Trader Joe’s?

6. Lidl

Another fantastic and affordable-priced grocery store is Lidl. You can’t help but fall in love with this place because it has so many delicious products, even though they aren’t a very well-known brand. If you are a foodie like me and you enjoy eating bakery goodies, at Lidl you will find a lot of fresh stuff. Did I mention how delicious their ciabattas are? Along with croissants, muffins, cookies, and artisan breads, Lidl creates its own label and secret recipes.

And because it’s an international grocery store, a lot of their products come from a lot of countries: spaghetti from Italy, chocolate from Germany, and a lot of cured meats from Spain and Portugal. They also offer thematic weeks for most of the European countries. You can choose from some French blue cheese, pre-made Italian frozen pizzas, or some delicious German sausages.

And trust me, there are so many options that you will leave with the shopping cart almost full! Furthermore, in 2019, Lidl was ranked as the third most popular supermarket, and this was based upon overall shopper experience.

7. WinCo Foods

WinCo Foods is one amazing grocery chain that buys most of its products directly from farmers and manufacturers. A lot of their items, such as grains, snacks, pastas, and even coffee, are usually sold in bulk and can be purchased by the pound. And the spices and herbs are usually purchased by the ounce.

If you’re a bulk shopper, then WinCo Foods might be your next favorite place to stop by. However, because they have limited staff, you will have to bag your own groceries. I don’t think this is an inconvenience if other things are great. Don’t forget that the only accepted payments are debit cards or cash.

8. Walmart

How can I forget about Walmart? As America’s largest food retailer, their annual grocery sales exceed $200 billion. Sheesh! That’s a lot. Nevertheless, they have some competition with Trader Joe’s and Costco because they all have a lot of discounts and a plethora of nice items to choose from. The best deals are usually sold under their Great Value brand, but there are also plenty of other name-brand snacks, frozen meals, cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, and office supplies. Walmart quickly gained the trust of its customers by offering numerous seasonal and non-seasonal discounts.

High-quality products don’t need to be overpriced and their system works by proving that for its shoppers. Are you one of them?

Finding the most affordable grocery store is pretty easy. The only thing you need to work on, before you step into any of the above-mentioned options is your budget. Don’t forget to compare the prices and see which one fits your wallet better!
