Who Qualifies for SSI Benefits?

SSI is designed to help Americans with limited income and resources who meet specific eligibility requirements.

Generally, applicants must:

  • Be age 65 or older, blind, or have a qualifying disability
  • Meet federal income and resource limits
  • Be a U.S. citizen or certain qualifying noncitizens
  • Reside in the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands

The program is based on financial need rather than work history, making it different from traditional Social Security retirement benefits.

Recipients who leave the United States for extended periods may experience interruptions in benefits if they no longer meet residency requirements.

Unfortunately once again for some reason I don’t get to have this money. My SSI check is over $1700 andd I have smaller checks coming in. My rent is $1450 a month which has to be paid first. When you state there are people who have extra income coming in you don’t consider electic, gas, trash, phone and etc to pay. All have increased again not considered by whoever makes decicions who receives the extra money. I’m stressed out each day on living on hardly nothing after everything is paid. The last week of each month eating sandwiches, cereal, beans and maybe some rice. I’m on a lot of medicines which cost so much. You say the government is helping the disabled, seniors and etc. How are you when you don’t know all most of us pay out each month, you don’t know what each person has to go through.
