2027 REAL ID Enforcement for In-Person SSA Field Office Visits
While digital accounts handle most everyday transactions, thousands of Americans visit physical Social Security field offices every week to handle complex claims or verify identity documents. The security requirements for entering these federal facilities have reached full enforcement. The Department of Homeland Security began official REAL ID enforcement on May 7, 2025, with complete agency alignment taking effect by May 5, 2027.
When you visit a Social Security field office to complete identity verification, present an accepted form of identification. Acceptable primary documents include:
- REAL ID-Compliant Driver’s License or State Identification Card: Identified by a star printed in the top right corner of the card.
- Valid U.S. Passport or Passport Card: Accepted for identity verification across all federal security checkpoints.
- Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL): Issued by select states (such as New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, and Washington) to verify both identity and citizenship.
- U.S. Military Identification: Valid active duty or veteran credentials issued by the Department of Defense.
- Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) or Foreign Passport: Accompanied by valid federal immigration documentation.
If your state driver’s license reads “Not for Federal Identification” or lacks the REAL ID star, security personnel and SSA representatives cannot accept it as primary proof of identity for official transactions. Acquiring a REAL ID or keeping an updated U.S. passport handy ensures that you avoid unexpected delays when visiting a local office.
I reside overseas and received verification letter via courier service. Us embassy on annual basis conduct onsite verification. Will this be sufficient enough to verify a living recipient?
