How to Secure Your Account: A Step-by-Step Guide

Setting up your secure authentication path takes less than fifteen minutes. Follow these actionable steps to protect your Social Security profile and ensure full access to your benefit records:

  1. Choose Your Identity Partner: Navigate to the official SSA portal and select either Login.gov or ID.me. Both services meet high federal identity assurance standards.
  2. Prepare Necessary Documentation: Gather your unexpired driver’s license, state photo ID, or passport, along with your Social Security card or previous tax record.
  3. Create Login Credentials: Input an active email address and create a strong, unique password. Avoid using passwords associated with other personal or financial accounts.
  4. Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Link an authentication application (such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator) or enter your mobile phone number to receive security push notifications or text codes.
  5. Complete Facial or Document Proofing: Take a clear photo of your identification document using your smartphone or computer camera. Upload the image and follow on-screen instructions for facial matching verification if prompted.
  6. Confirm Social Security Linkage: Grant permission to share your verified identity status with the Social Security Administration. Once authorized, you gain direct access to your my Social Security dashboard.
  7. Review Your Earnings Record: Examine your annual posted earnings for historical accuracy; reporting discrepancies early ensures correct benefit calculations when you retire.

I reside overseas and received verification letter via courier service. Us embassy on annual basis conduct onsite verification. Will this be sufficient enough to verify a living recipient?
